The album was produced by Thom Bell. Like The Delfonics' debut album ''La La Means I Love You'', ''The Sound of Sexy Soul'' is evenly split between new songs written by Bell and lead singer William Hart, and cover versions. The album's lead single, "Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide from Love)", peaked at #35 on the pop chart at the time of original release, but became one of the group's most recognizable tracks after being sampled on The Fugees' "Ready or Not", a UK chart-topper in 1996 that also went to #22 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
